Angels' Matt Shoemaker suffers fractured skull from line drive to the head

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker was forced out of Sunday's game when a Kyle Seager line drive hit him in the head, which it was late discovered fractured his skull.

What It Means:

He spent the night in the hospital, receiving a CT scan and being looked at by neurologists, but was reportedly alert and responsive, which is always a good sign after a scare with a head injury. There is no timetable set for his return, but the Angels are not in playoff contention, and it should be safe to assume that his season is over.

Shoemaker posted a 3.88 ERA and 3.87 SIERA on the year, along with a 21.4 percent strikeout rate through 160 innings pitched. Those numbers are all worse than his career averages through four seasons in the majors.
