Mets' Zack Wheeler diagnosed with flexor strain
New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler has been diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow.
This is positive news for Wheeler, who met with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. The result wasn't totally clean, but certainly wasn't as bad as it potentially could have been for a pitcher recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 26-year-old right-hander received a PRP injection and was told to rest for the next two weeks. Despite the news, it remains unlikely that he is able to make it back to the majors this season.
Before missing the entire 2015 season, Wheeler showed lots of promise when he last pitched in 2014, posting a 3.49 xFIP and a 23.55 strikeout percentage (league average was 20.36) across 185 1/3 innings. He's only thrown one inning of professional baseball this year, coming on August 6 for the Mets' High-A minor league club.
