Jonathan Papelbon likely to pick team in next 24 hours
Free agent reliever Jonathan Papelbon is likely to make a decision on where to sign in the next 24 hours, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
The Washington Nationals officially released Papelbon over the weekend, and it appears he's headed for a contender between now and Wednesday. The Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins have been mentioned as potential fits, while the 35-year-old righty is also reportedly open to a reunion with the Boston Red Sox, but it's unknown if the interest would be mutual.
Papelbon's 4.37 ERA is the worst mark of his career, exceeding the previous high of 3.90 that he set back in 2010 with the Red Sox. His 8.81 strikeout percentage is also the worst he has recorded. He has 19 saves across 22 opportunities this season (35 innings).
