Padres' Colin Rea needs Tommy John surgery
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Colin Rea will undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2017 season.
Rea suffered the torn UCL in his first start with the Marlins after being acquired in late July. He was dealt back to the Padres after suffering the injury, so hopefully he comes out of the surgery ok and can rehab to be ready for the 2018 season.
In his second season in the majors, Rea is twirling a 4.82 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP across 102 2/3 innings of work. He is 5-5 through 19 starts on the year, while his 17.62 strikeout percentage has fallen from last year's 19.55 percent rate.
