Joey Rickard

Joey Rickard not expected to return before September for Orioles

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter "didn't sound optimistic" that outfielder Joey Rickard (thumb) will be able to return before September, per MASN's Roch Kubatko.

What It Means:

Rickard crashed into the wall towards the end of July, causing him to tear a ligament in his right thumb. The thumb remains in a split, but the swelling has lessened. Rickard was hopeful that he would be able to remove the hardware after being re-examined on Monday, but that didn't prove to be the case. Showalter stated that he remains optimistic his 25-year-old outfielder will be able to return this season. The initial timetable had him sidelined until the end of August or early September.

Rickard owns a .268/.319/.377 slash with a .304 wOBA in 282 plate appearances during his rookie campaign. He has tallied five home runs, 19 RBI's and four stolen bases on the year.
