Edwin Diaz fans three, notches first career save for Mariners
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Edwin Diaz worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first career save Tuesday versus the Red Sox.
Diaz did hand out a one-out free pass to Travis Shaw, but he punched out the other three batters at the plate, sending Boston packing with a 99 mph fastball to top Red Sox prospect Andrew Benintendi. Steve Cishek has been demoted to a lesser role for Seattle, with Diaz taking over closing duties.
Across 26 innings, the 22-year-old right-hander has been stellar, posting a 1.73 ERA, 1.40 SIERA and 46.02 percent strikeout rate through 25 appearances.
