Matt Cain

Matt Cain activated by Giants, will start Wednesday

The San Francisco Giants activated pitcher Matt Cain from the 15-day disabled list.

What It Means:

Cain will rejoin the Giants' rotation on Wednesday to face the Boston Red Sox. It should make for a tough matchup, as Boston owns a team .353 wOBA, which is easily the best in baseball. Cain has posted a 5.34 ERA and just a 16.14 strikeout percentage (league average is 21.00 percent) in 57 1/3 innings this season. He was sidelined for five weeks because of a hamstring strain.

Cain's 4.89 xFIP is not much better than his ERA and his 4.85 SIERA is the highest it's been since his rookie year (2005). Our models project him to record a 5.38 ERA and a 14.20 strikeout percentage over the remaining course of the season.
