Mets' Juan Lagares (thumb) to begin rehab stint Tuesday

New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares (thumb) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Binghamton.

What It Means:

Lagares, who has been on the shelf since June 14, is hoping to avoid surgery on his sprained left thumb. He and Jose Reyes should form a hot ticket in Binghamton, as the newly-signed soon-to-be third baseman is believed to join Lagares in Double-A on Tuesday. He's expected to be joined by the newly-signed Jose Reyes, who will move up from Low-A Brooklyn on Tuesday. Lagares has been sidelined since June 14 with a sprained left thumb and still hopes to avoid surgery.

Our algorithms project Lagares' bat to cool off significantly over the rest of the season, with his current .331 wOBA sinking to a projected .280 wOBA in just 38 further plate appearances. We forecast a mediocre .257/.297/.314 slash line with one more steal and three more RBI's. Granted, these counting stats will be heavily dependent on Lagares' health.
