Cubs sign Brian Matusz to minor league deal
The Chicago Cubs inked pitcher Brian Matusz to a minor league contract on Monday.
Matusz was part of a trade that sent him to the Atlanta Braves last month in return for a draft pick to the Baltimore Orioles, but the Braves released him almost as soon as they got him. He has struggled with injury and inconsistency this season in limited work, but he could be useful to the Cubs if he can get healthy. Chicago doesn't have many weaknesses, but the bullpen could use some bolstering.
Matusz posted a 2.94 ERA in 49 innings of relief last season, but his xFIP was exactly a run higher (3.94). He had an impressive 27.20 strikeout percentage, well above the 20.40 percent league average.
