White Sox sign Justin Morneau to one-year deal
The Chicago White Sox signed first baseman Justin Morneau to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The White Sox are shaking things up. They traded for James Shields last weekend and designated Mat Latos for assignment on Thursday. Now Morneau, a 13-year veteran and former American League MVP, will enter the mix. The 35-year-old is only two years removed from winning the National League batting title, though injuries limited him to just 49 games last season. He'll back up Jose Abreu at first base and will probably spend some time at designated hitter.
Morneau owns a career .282/.349/.483 slash with a .355 wOBA. Despite his limited playing time last season, he showed he can still hit, posting a .310 average and a .353 wOBA with three home runs.
