J.J. Hardy has a left foot fracture, out 6-8 weeks for Orioles

Baltimore Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left foot and will be placed on the disabled list.

What It Means:

Hardy fouled a ball off his foot in the fourth inning Sunday and a CT scan taken Monday morning revealed a broken bone. MASN's Roch Kubatko says the Orioles are expecting this to be an absence of 6-8 weeks. Manny Machado moved from third base to shortstop Sunday and Pedro Alvarez took over at the hot corner. Ryan Flaherty and Paul Janish will likely factor into the mix at those positions over the next couple of months. Chris Davis can play a little third base too.

Hardy is slashing .244/.291/.410 with a .302 wOBA and 2 home runs in 86 plate appearances this season. It's a small sample size (188 innings), but Hardy's UZR/150 of 15.0 ranks 8th best among shortstops this season. Offensively, the O's are better off with Alvarez in the lineup, as our projections forecast him to finish the season with a .314 wOBA and 15 home runs, both of which are superior totals to our projections for Hardy.
