Cardinals' Marco Gonzales to undergo Tommy John
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Marco Gonzales (left elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Gonzales will miss the entirety of the 2016 campaign. He sought multiple opinions on his bum elbow prior to finally deciding that Tommy John surgery would be the most prudent action for his future. He was the 19th overall selection in the 2013 amateur draft, but injuries have plagued him since he joined the Cardinals' organization. A shoulder injury sidelined him for the vast majority of the 2015 season.
Gonzales, the 19th overall pick in 2013, battled shoulder troubles for much of the 2015 season and made only one appearance at the major league level. He had a 4.15 ERA in 34 2/3 innings with the Cardinals in 2014 and also pitched in the playoffs that year.
