Cubs' Kyle Schwarber (ankle/knee) to be placed on disabled list
Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber (ankle/knee) is expected to be placed on the disabled list.
It's no surprise, of course, after Schwarber had to be carted off the field Thursday following an injury to his left ankle and knee. Initial X-rays on his ankle showed no break, but there's some worry that an MRI will show significant damage to his knee. An update on Schwarber's status should be available later Friday. Munenori Kawasaki is expected to take Schwarber's spot on the roster.
Schwarber impressed as a rookie in 2015, slashing .246/.355/.487 with a .364 wOBA. He hit 16 home runs in just 273 plate appearances, which is close to a 40-home-run pace. We project the 23-year-old to post a .354 wOBA with 29 home runs in 2016 -- his first full season in the majors -- making him a valuable commodity as a catcher-eligible player. Those numbers will take a hit, however, if he misses significant time.
