David Murphy opts out of Red Sox contract
Outfielder David Murphy has opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox.
The club now has 48 hours to either add him to the major league roster or grant his outright release. It's unclear if Murphy has intentions to play elsewhere or if he's pondering hanging up his cleats for good.
The 34-year-old Murphy batted .283 with 10 home runs and a .739 OPS over 391 plate appearances last season. He accrued a wOBA of .318 and contributed just 0.3 Wins Above Replacement to his teams.
