Max Scherzer is coming into tonight’s start with a career-high 11.4 K/9 for the season, with a big help coming from his record-tying 20 strikeout performance versus the Tigers. His 3.80 ERA isn’t impressive, but his 3.07 xFIP shows that he’s pitched much better than his ERA indicates.

Scherzer has been consistently elite so far this year -- he’s struck out seven-plus batters in 8 of his 10 starts. And as we’ve seen, he has the strikeout upside to win a tournament for you.

He has a tough matchup against the Cardinals tonight, who have hit the third-most home runs versus right-handed pitching this season. With Scherzer’s 43 percent fly-ball rate, it’s conceivable we see a few long balls tonight.

Despite being a -155 favorite with huge strikeout potential, the matchup calls for Scherzer as a GPP-only option.
