Jeff Samardzija has a lot going for him in tonight's matchup. He's pitching at home in AT&T Park, and faces a Milwaukee Brewers team that has a 3.79 implied team total and is prone to punchouts.

But will Samardzija take advantage? Following a strong first half, his numbers have dropped across the board since the All-Star break, most notably his strikeout rate, which has fallen to 21.0%, down from 26.2%. His SIERA (4.17) and swinging-strike rate (9.1%) have also declined.

Normally we might call it a small sample size, except these numbers are all reminiscent of what Samardzija did in 2016. Indeed, it may be the first half that's the outlier, and we're merely seeing him regress back to being a fairly league average pitcher.

While the matchup still gives Samardzija a relatively safe floor, you'll find more upside in Jimmy Nelson, Charlie Morton, and Patrick Corbin in the same price range.
