On a slate devoid of pitching, Mike Clevinger comes in as one of the few pitchers the would appear to have the strikeout potential to make a difference in tournaments. His 27.1% strikeout rate and 13.2% swinging-strike rate both check in as the best on the board.

The trouble is, Clevinger is wildly inconsistent due to a 12.6% walk rate, and he's struggled mightily in his last five appearances (three starts, two in relief), allowing a scary 48.1% hard-hit rate. He did have a seven-inning, nine-strikeout gem in that span, but it came against the strikeout-prone Tampa Bay Rays, and strikeouts are something that tonight's opponent, the Boston Red Sox, don't dole out very often.

Indeed, Boston's active roster is only striking out 18.6% of the time against righties, and have a solid 4.56 implied team total. Clevinger may typically possess a ton of punchout upside, but between his recent form and this matchup, you're probably better off avoiding this spot.
