The Mind of Manning

We’ve already detailed how dreadful the Broncos’ offense was this season. We’ve all watched as Peyton Manning has struggled to complete passes that were once taken for granted. He’s battled health and age throughout the season, and frankly, it’s been hard to watch.

So why would I choose to highlight him in this article about the Broncos’ strengths?

Well, believe it or not, there are some important factors that point to Manning as an asset.

First, he looked completely healthy in the AFC Championship. Sure, his arm strength will never be what it was in his prime, but he looks to be entirely over the foot issue that plagued him earlier this year. He appeared to have little issue moving in the pocket and at times was even able to roll away from pressure.

Second, Manning has been given two weeks to rest and prepare for Carolina. Long considered one of the smartest, most prepared players to grace an NFL field, Manning will undoubtedly use the extra time to study and dissect the dangerous Panthers’ defense and work on ways to exploit their weaknesses.

Finally, as much as his physical skills have diminished, his mind is as sharp as ever. His ability to read defenses, change plays, and put his offense in a favorable position is second to none. For evidence, look back at week 17. Brock Osweiler started the game versus San Diego, and was benched in the second half in favor of Manning. While Manning didn’t light up the box score (69 yards, 0 touchdowns), he was able to put the offense in position to run the ball more effectively, leading to the much needed victory.

He was also able to protect the ball in that game, and since throwing 17 interceptions in his first nine games, he’s thrown none in his last three outings.

By the numbers, Manning is one of the best postseason performers in NFL history, and his mental preparation is just one more reason to believe in the Broncos.
