Method of Ranking?
Hi,

I have a question about where NumberFire gets its offensive and defensive rankings from? For example, Alshon Jeffries is playing San Diego tonight. They have San Diego’s defense ranked at 27th. Since he’s obviously a receiver, it seems more relevant to use San Diego’s passing defense ranking. Regardless, San Diego’s overall defense is 19th according to NFL.com and their passing defense is 9th. This seems to be off by a lot. Are they looking at different factors?

Thanks,

Joel

We use a metric called Net Expected Points (NEP) rather than just yardage. It compares a team's play relative to expectation level. You can read up on it in the glossary at the bottom of the site. A quick example of how NEP and yardage differ: a 10-yard pass play doesn't hold the same value on 3rd-and-5 as it does on 3rd-and-20, though yardage stats will treat them the same.
