Brian Hoyer signs with Patriots for three years
The New England Patriots signed quarterback Brian Hoyer, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, to a three-year contract.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers were also interested in Hoyer's services, but he wound up signing with the team who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in 2009. He will serve as Tom Brady's backup following Jimmy Garoppolo's trade to the San Francisco 49ers.
In six starts this year, Hoyer's -0.09 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back was his worst mark since the 2012 season and ranks third-worst in the NFL this year among the 29 quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks. He completed 58.0 percent of his passes for 207.5 yards per game with 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
