Lions sign Matthew Stafford to record-setting extension
The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Matthew Stafford to a five-year, $135 million extension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The extension keeps Stafford in Detroit through the 2022 season, at which time he will be 34 years old. Schefter also reports that the deal includes a $50 million signing bonus and $92 million in guaranteed money. To date, it is the richest contract in NFL history and makes Stafford the league's highest-paid player at $27 million per season.
In 2016, Stafford enjoyed the best season of his career, as he totaled 135.81 Net Expected Points while throwing for 4,327 yards and 24 touchdowns en route to a Wild Card appearance with the Lions. For 2017, we project Stafford to throw for 4,219 yards and 27 touchdowns, making him QB11 in our fantasy football rankings.
