DeShone Kizer impresses, Browns unwilling to name him starter

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said "it's way too early to talk about" making second-rounder DeShone Kizer the starter after his impressive preseason opener.

What It Means:

“Let’s see it for what it was. The guy made some plays at the end to give us a chance to win, but there’s still things he needs to do better." Kizer completed 11-of-18 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown while adding 2 rushes for 13 yards on Thursday night. He played the entire second half with the third-string unit, doing most of his damage in the final quarter, where he went 8-of-12 for 173 yards and a touchdown while connecting on a 45-yard game-winner with only 1:52 on the clock in which the rookie put his impressive arm strength on display. He also tossed a 52-yard bomb that put the Browns on the goal line and managed to successfully avoid pressure in the pocket throughout the night. It's necessary to point out that this all came against third-stringers in an exhibition game, but it's only a matter of time before Kizer replaces Brock Osweiler as Cleveland's starting quarterback. Cody Kessler was unremarkable on Thursday.

Among the 39 quarterbacks to pick up at least 100 drop backs in 2016, Osweiler's was seventh-worst in Passing Net Expected Points per drop back.
