Falcons sign Devonta Freeman to five-year extension

The Atlanta Falcons have signed running back Devonta Freeman to a five-year extension worth $41.25 million, per Sports Illustrated's Mike Silver.

What It Means:

After running into some issues in negotiations, the two sides sorted things out rather quickly. The new deal keeps Freeman in Atlanta until 2022, at which time he'll turn 30 years old. It also makes him football's highest-paid back on a multi-year deal, with $22 million guaranteed and a $15 million signing bonus. All this leaves Tevin Coleman as a backup/third-down back until further notice.

Freeman's Rush NEP of 22.9 ranked fourth among all running backs in 2016, as he finished as RB6 in fantasy football. This year, numberFire's models have him as fantasy's RB5 as he looks to have another great season in the Falcons' high-powered offense.
