49ers reaffirm Brian Hoyer as their 2017 starting quarterback
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer "is our starting quarterback," head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
San Francisco traded up to select Iowa's C.J. Beathard in the third round Friday night, but Shanahan expects the rookie to "develop" behind Hoyer this season. Hoyer is a reasonable stop-gap, but neither he nor Beathard looks like the long-term answer. The 49ers should take their big swing next offseason.
Hoyer churned out 0.22 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back on 203 drop backs this year -- the eighth-best rate among quarterbacks to drop back at least 100 times.
