Bills remain uncertain to pick up Sammy Watkins's fifth-year option

The Buffalo Bills "aren't comfortable" picking up wide receiver Sammy Watkins' fifth-year option while he is still recovering from foot surgery, the Buffalo News' Vic Carucci reports.

What It Means:

Reports of the Bills waffling on the decision have been circulating for weeks, but it has never seemed like a real choice. Watkins is extremely talented, Buffalo paid up hard in draft capital to get him, and they have nearly no one else to catch footballs. The deadline for a final decision is May 3. Buffalo added wide receiver Zay Jones in the second round Friday night, but he (and the Bills) would be better served by having another receiving threat above him in the pecking order.

Watkins' Reception Net Expected Points per target was 30th-best among the 92 receivers with 50 targets in 2016.
