Rex Burkhead is New England's richest running back since 2010
New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead's one-year, $3.15 million deal makes him the highest-paid Patriot at the position since Fred Taylor in 2010.
Burkhead is "viewed as a key cog, both offensively and on special teams" by the Patriots, per Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston. He's not alone, as the Providence Journal's Mark Daniels is convinced Burkhead "is coming to the Patriots with a chance to be their starting running back." The 26-year-old will be the first back in New England to receive north of $2 million in more than half a decade.
60 running backs had at least 70 carries last year, and among them Burkhead's 0.15 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry was third-best. As a team, the Patriots finished ninth in schedule-adjusted Rushing NEP per play.
