Chargers tried getting Antonio Gates touchdown record for tight ends
The San Diego Chargers made an effort to get Antonio Gates the all-time touchdown record for tight ends last season, one team assistant confirmed to ESPN's Matthew Berry.
Gates is currently tied for the record with 111 touchdowns, which he will surely break this upcoming season, but with an emerging Hunter Henry, the assistant assured there will be "no such effort" to break the mark in 2017. Gates turns 37 in June while the 22-year-old Henry is coming off only his first season in the NFL.
Among the 17 tight ends to see at least 80 targets last season, Gates finished 10th in Reception Net Expected Points Per Target at 0.65.
