Chiefs are committed to Alex Smith as 2017 starter

The Kansas City Chiefs are committed to Alex Smith as their starting quarterback for 2017, head coach Andy Reid reiterated.

What It Means:

Smith's 2016 season was his worst in Kansas City, and his performance in the Divisional Round loss was one of his worst of the year. Still, the Chiefs aren't considering turning the page yet. "Alex is our quarterback — there’s no question about that or anything else," Reid said at Pro Bowl weekend. Smith has talent limitations that aren't going away, and -- owed $17 million in 2018 -- he is entering a make-or-break year in 2017.

Smith's game manager ways led him to a 0.14 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back, just above the league average of 0.12. This was 16th-best among 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs.
