Patriots no longer saw Jamie Collins as three-down linebacker
The New England Patriots no longer viewed linebacker Jamie Collins as a three-down player, ESPN Boston theorizes.
It wasn't a theory on Sunday, as Collins played just 48 of the team's 78 snaps, coming off the field on running downs. Collins played every snap for the first four weeks before small declines in Weeks 5 and 7. He has a reputation for "freelancing," but continued to make plays. Head coach Bill Belichick isn't big for going off script, however, and the sides appeared destined to split in free agency.
Collins joins a Cleveland Browns' defensive unit that ranks 29th in schedule-adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play in 2016.
