Jets reach suprise deal with Muhammad Wilkerson

New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson was signed to a five-year, $85 million contract.

What It Means:

This is definitely the most surprising deal of the deadline. Wilkerson looked poised to hold out all the way to the regular season after he skipped OTAs and minicamp, while expressing no intentions of returning to the team anytime soon. That's all behind them now, with the contract paying $54 million over the first three years, including $37 million guaranteed. We'll see if this impacts the potential return of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Our algorithms currently project Wilkerson to rack up 60.68 tackles, 13.20 sacks and 4.00 passes defensed in 2016. The Jets' defense finished 2015 ranked sixth in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play.
