Sam Howell benched for Commanders in Week 17
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell will not start in Week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers, per head coach Ron Rivera.
Howell lost the starting job to veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett. He could potentially take back over for the Commanders' season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. The second-year quarterback was benched in last week's game after completing 6 of 22 pass attempts for 56 yards and 2 interceptions. Howell has just 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions over the last four games.
Among the 30 quarterbacks with at least 250 dropbacks this season, Howell is averaging the fifth-worst Passing Net Expected Points per attempt (negative-0.09). Brissett is averaging a significantly superior 0.77 Passing NEP, albeit on just 23 dropbacks.
