Bucs give Baker Mayfield starter treatment in second preseason game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told media members Sunday that quarterback Baker Mayfield did not play in the second preseason game because they didn't want Mayfield to play "once the initial offensive line was out of the game".

What It Means:

Fans of the preseason may have noted that the Bucs did not give Mayfield any reps in their second preseason game, instead leaning heavily on Kyle Trask to take care of business on Saturday. Bowles' quote does heavily imply that Mayfield will be the team's starting quarterback come Week 1.

Ousted from Cleveland after the Deshaun Watons trade, Mayfield's tenure in Carolina last year ended in disaster. The former first overall pick made his way to Los Angeles to make some decent spot-starts for the banged up Rams, and now looks to have a firm grasp on the QB1 gig in Tampa Bay for the upcoming year. For fantasy purposes he files in as numberFire's QB27, but hopefully the former Oklahoma standout can help support Chris Godwin and Mike Evans in fantasy this fall.
