Baker Mayfield starting Buccaneers first preseason game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield will start Friday's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Wednesday.

What It Means:

Bowles added that Kyle Trask will start the Buccaneers' second preseason game against the New York Jets on August 19. Mayfield and Trask are listed as co-starters on the team's first unofficial depth chart, so they will likely see a comparable amount of playing time versus the Steelers. The starting quarterback job seems to be truly up for grabs right now in Tampa Bay. Mayfield played in 12 games and made 10 starts between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams last season. Trask, who was taken with the last pick of the second round in 2021, didn't take any meaningful snaps in the regular season while Tom Brady was on the team.

Operating under the assumption that Baker is the starter all season, he's the QB29 in numberFire's preseason rankings. Our models project him for 3,920.5 passing yards on a 62.0 completion percentage, with 23.97 touchdowns and 16.5 interceptions. We also have Mayfield forecasted for 44.0 carries, 188.5 rushing yards, and 1.69 touchdowns.
