Patriots' Malcolm Butler to receive first-round RFA tender next offseason

New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler to receive a first-round tender when he becomes a restricted free agent next offseason, the Boston Herald expects.

What It Means:

Butler is angling for a contract extension, but there's little incentive for New England to reach a deal unless Butler is willing to play at a team-friendly rate. Linebackers Dont'a Hightower and Jamie Collins are also headed for free agency in 2017, so locking up Butler isn't necessarily the team's top priority. The Pro Bowl corner is due to make $600,000 in the final year of his deal.

In 2015, the Patriots' defense ranked 12th in the league by Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play.
