Ihenacho, Johnson battling for strong safety role in Washington
Duke Ihenacho and Jeron Johnson are vying for the strong safety job in Washington. Dashon Goldson will start at free safety.
According to Jones of the Washington Post, Ihenacho and Johnson are expected to split first-team reps during training camp and the preseason. Washington's pass defense struggles from last season cannot be overstated, so this could prove to be an important battle.
According to our schedule-adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) metric, which compares a team's passing defense to historical expectation level, Washington had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season. Washington posted an Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per play of 0.27, the third-worst score since the 2000 season.
