Commanders acquire Carson Wentz in trade with Colts
Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders on Wednesday.
Wentz will depart Indianapolis after a short, one-year stay. The Colts gave up first- and third-round picks to acquire him from the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason and have now acquired multiple draft picks to move him to Washington. In addition to swapping their 2022 second-round picks, the Commanders will send the Colts their 2022 third-round pick, and their 2023 third-round pick, which will wind up being their 2023 second-round pick if Wentz plays more than 70% of Washington's plays this season. The 29-year-old former second overall draft pick struggled down the stretch last season but does represent an upgrade for the Commanders after Taylor Heinicke started 16 games for them last year. The Colts are rumored to be in the market for a new quarterback after letting Wentz go, with just sophomore Sam Ehlinger and James Morgan on the roster.
Wentz started all 17 games for Indianapolis last season, completing 322 of 516 passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
