Bears believe David Montgomery avoided ACL tear

The Chicago Bears believe running back David Montgomery avoided an ACL tear in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.

What It Means:

The Bears are doing further testing Monday to determine the extent of Montgomery's injury, but it sounds like he avoided a season-ender. The third-year back was forced to exit in the fourth quarter on Sunday after rushing 23 times for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He wasn't targeted in the passing game for the first time this season, but the carries set a season-high and it was his second 100-yard outing of the campaign. Damien Williams is next in line on the depth chart, but he reportedly suffered a thigh bruise in Sunday's win while gaining 70 yards on 10 touches with a touchdown. Khalil Herbert could be the de facto starter if Montgomery and Williams are both banged up for Week 5 versus the Las Vegas Raiders.

Among running backs with five-plus carries in Week 4, Williams is third with 0.41 Rushing Net Expected Points per carry and Montgomery is eighth (0.27). The Raiders are 16th in FanDuel points allowed per game to the running back position this season.
