Chiefs' Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opts out of 2020 NFL season

Kansas City Chiefs right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has opted out of the upcoming 2020 NFL season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

What It Means:

Duvernay-Tardif, who holds a doctorate in medicine, is the first NFL player to officially opt out of the 2020 season due to concerns with COVID-19. Duvernay-Tardif intends to continue to work as an orderly at a long-term care facility in Canada, helping fight COVID-19. He was scheduled to make $2.75 million this season, but will instead receive $150,000 from the NFL's opt-out deal. The 29-year-old played a total of 17 games and 1,103 snaps on the Chiefs' offensive line last season, including their postseason run. A former 6th round draft pick back in 2014, Duvernay-Tardif was a central part of a Chiefs' offensive line that ranked 7th in pass blocking and 13th in run blocking last season, according to Pro Football Focus. With the NFL and NFLPA agreeing to terms on an amended 2020 CBA on Friday, players now have the ability to opt-out of the upcoming season. A deadline for any potential opt-outs is reportedly a week after both sides officially sign the deal, which could happen as soon as Monday.

Duvernay-Tardif was Pro Football Focus' 38th ranked guard in pass blocking last season.
