Jeff Thomas has 'best chance' among Patriots' UDFA wideouts

New England Patriots wide receiver Jeff Thomas has the "best chance" to make the roster among the team's four undrafted free agents at the position, according to Doug Kyed of NESN.

What It Means:

The other receivers are Isaiah Zuber, Will Hastings, and Sean Riley. Kyed writes that Thomas has the most "pure talent" of the group and noted that he's also the best returner. Thomas averaged 22.6 yards per kick return and 18.9 yards per punt return in college, so if he makes an early impact, it will likely come on special teams. Thomas only appeared in 21-of-26 games over his final two seasons with the Miami Hurricanes due to multiple team rules violations. He averaged 44.9 yards per game and 14.3 yards per catch in that span while scoring 3 touchdowns each season.

Thomas had 83 receptions for 1,316 yards and 8 touchdowns in his collegiate career. He finished 9th in the ACC in 2019 with 268 kick return yards. Thomas' hands proved to be more reliable than his availability, as he was credited with zero drops last year, per Pro Football Focus. He committed a total of 6 drops over his first two years with Miami. In 2018, on catchable passes that traveled 20-plus yards in the air, Thomas caught 9 passes on 9 targets for 327 yards and 3 touchdowns, more than half of his total (563) that season.
