Philadelphia Eagles rookie running back Wendell Smallwood can't be trusted as a three-down back yet, Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com says.

What It Means:

Smallwood may have the highest ceiling of any running back on the Eagles' roster but his inexperience as a pass protector could limit his playing time in year one. In college he was mostly used as safety valve in the flat on passing plays, rarely being asked to protect against blitzing linebackers. Smallwood will need to improve that part of his game, though he could be thrust into a larger role if (more likely when) lead back Ryan Mathews gets hurt.

Mathews had a very good season in 2015. Among backs with at least 100 carries, he ranked 13th in Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt. If he gets more volume and maintains his per-play efficiency, he could have a very productive 2016. With 7.22 Rushing NEP, Sproles ranked seventh among the 54 running backs with at least 100 carries in 2015. He also generated the ninth most Reception NEP (25.71) among these players.
