Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka has bone spur removed from elbow

New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

What It Means:

The bone spur is apparently something Tanaka had while still in Japan, but he was able to play through it. The expected rehab will take about six weeks, meaning he should be healthy in time for spring training.

Tanaka was unable to replicate the success this season that he had in 2014, which saw him post the fifth best xFIP (2.58) among starters with at least 130 innings pitched, but he was still effective. His 3.29 xFIP this season was 22nd best among pitchers with at least 150 innings pitched, and his strikeout to walk ratio of 5.15 was 11th best. A fully healthy Tanaka should be able to at least match these numbers in 2016.
