Cardinals shut down Matt Carpenter for rest of 2017
The St. Louis Cardinals have shut down first/third baseman Matt Carpenter (shoulder) for the duration of the 2017 season, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.
Now that the Cardinals have been officially eliminated from playoff contention, Carpenter will take a seat in order to rest his nagging shoulder injury. He is set to undergo an MRI on Friday, but he's confident that he will not require surgery to correct the issue.
At age 31, Carpenter played 145 games while totaling 23 home runs and 69 RBI in 622 plate appearances this season. His 1.51 nERD is his lowest since 2014 and ranks 2nd on the team behind Tommy Pham (2.89).
