Yankees acquire Sonny Gray from Athletics
The New York Yankees acquired starting pitcher Sonny Gray and $1.5 million in international spending money from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Dustin Fowler, infield/outfield prospect Jorge Mateo, and starting pitcher Jameson Kaprielian.
The Yankees finally landed their man in Gray, who will be under team control through 2019. After an underwhelming 2016 (5.69 ERA), the 27-year-old right-hander has bounced back this season with a 3.43 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 23.5 strikeout percentage (K%) across 97 innings. He owns a 6-5 record through 16 starts. Fowler and Kaprielian are a pair of promising prospects, but both are out for the season with injuries. Mateo was a consensus top-100 prospect entering 2017, and he will likely join the Athletics' Double-A affiliation.
numberFire's models project Gray to turn in a 3.62 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 17.8 K% in 62 1/3 innings over the remainder of the year. Per Ben Fawkes of ESPN, this deal improved the Yankees' odds of winning the World Series from 10-1 to 7-1 at the Westgate in Las Vegas.
