Pirates' Jameson Taillon (cancer) fans six in first rehab start
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jameson Taillon (cancer) struck out six batters over three scoreless innings Sunday in his first rehab start with Double-A Altoona.
Taillon hasn't pitched in the majors since May 3 as he recovers from a procedure to treat testicular cancer. He allowed only one hit and walked one in Sunday's outing. It shouldn't be much longer before the 25-year-old right-hander is back in the big league rotation, but manager Clint Hurdle has made it clear that the Pirates are going to take a conservative approach with Taillon's return. "We don't have expectations, and we want to take it slow with him so he doesn't feel any unneeded urgency," said Hurdle. "He needs to get right when he's right ... this is uncharted territory."
In six starts (35 1/3 innings pitched) this season, Taillon recorded a 3.31 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 20.1 percent strikeout rate.
