Jose Berrios not expected to make Twins' Opening Day rotation
The Minnesota Twins will meet with starting pitcher Jose Berrios on Friday and there's a "good chance" they'll tell him he won't make the Opening Day roster, reports Lavelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
It's a disappointing development for Berrios, who struggled across 14 big league starts last season, recording a 8.02 ERA (5.64 xFIP) across 58 1/3 innings with a 3-7 record. Still only 22, the promising right-hander should get another chance to make the rotation sometime this summer. Tyler Duffey, Justin Haley, Adalberto Mejia and Nick Tepesch make up the competition for the last spot in the Twins' rotation.
Assuming he cracks the rotation eventually, numberFire's metrics expect Berrios to record a 4.62 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 19.3 strikeout percentage across 97 1/3 innings in 2017, earning a 5-9 record.
