Rays continue to have interest in Derek Norris

The Tampa Bay Rays remain interested in free agent catcher Derek Norris but are likely "on the outside looking in," reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

What It Means:

Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reported last week that the Rays are one of as many as six teams interested in Norris, with the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies also being named. With Wilson Ramos (knee) sidelined for at least the first month and a half of the season, it would behoove Tampa Bay to add another backstop. While playing for the San Diego Padres last season, Norris tied his career-high with 14 home runs.

Norris struggled from the dish in 2016, turning in career-lows with a .186/.255/.328 slash and .252 wOBA across 458 plate appearances. His 30.3 percent strikeout rate was the highest of his five seasons in the big leagues.
