John Lackey (shoulder) nearing mound work for Cubs
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher John Lackey (shoulder) is aiming to throw a bullpen session this weekend in Los Angeles.
Lackey had a positive game of catch Tuesday in San Diego and is scheduled for a similar workout Wednesday. The 37-year-old righty has been on the disabled list with a shoulder strain since August 19, retroactive to August 15. With a 12.5-game lead in the National League Central division, the Cubs can afford to err on the side of caution with their veteran hurler.
Lackey owns a 3.74 xFIP and a career-best 24.9 strikeout percentage (league average is 21.0 percent) in 158 1/3 innings pitched this season.
