Madison Bumgarner shines, but Giants fall to Cincinnati

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was stupendous in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, striking out nine and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over eight innings.

What It Means:

Reds starter Dan Straily accomplished the rare feat of outperforming the Giants' ace in this one, as a Tucker Barnhart sac fly in the fifth and Jay Bruce solo jack in the seventh were enough to hand Bumgarner the loss on Wednesday afternoon. He'll hit the road to square off against the Philadelphia Phillies in his next scheduled trip to the mound.

Bumgarner lowered his ERA to 2.09 on the day, although his 3.38 xFIP is the third-worst mark of his career. Meanwhile, his 28.43 strikeout percentage is a career-high. The 26-year-old southpaw is now 10-6 across 150 2/3 innings of work (22 starts).
