Melvin Upton

Blue Jays and Padres finalize Melvin Upton trade

The San Diego Padres have traded outfielder Melvin Upton and cash considerations to the Toronto Blue Jays for right-handed pitching prospect Hansel Rodriguez.

What It Means:

The Padres will be absorbing much of Upton's contract as part of the deal, leaving only a reported $5 million to be paid by the Blue Jays.

Upton has a 0.27 nERD on the year, good for only 159th in the majors, and he's currently slashing .256/.304/.439 with a .317 wOBA in 374 plate appearances. Our models project him to post a .316 wOBA while tallying 8 home runs, 26 RBI's and 9 stolen bases in 244 plate appearances over the remainder of the season.
