Rangers will put Yu Darvish on a pitch count for Sunday's debut
Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish (elbow) will likely be limited to roughly 90 pitches in his 2016 debut Saturday versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, Rangers' pitching coach Doug Brocail told reporters.
"That would be a good pitch count," Brocail said. "It all depends on how he looks during the game and how many pitches he has. We're not going to have him go out there and throw 150 pitches. Hopefully he gets out there and uses his fastball to get early outs and uses his pitches wisely and keeps us in the game."
Darvish threw 87 pitches over six scoreless innings in his final rehab start Sunday with Double-A Frisco. He had a 0.90 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 21 punch outs in 20 total rehab innings. The ace right-hander is returning from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Darvish last pitched in the majors in 2014 and was having a dominant season before getting hurt. His 2.96 xFIP ranked 11th among pitchers with at least 140 innings pitched, and his 30.1 percent strikeout rate checked in third.
